Top 10 Things Every Home Poler Has In Common

As a home poler, you’ve probably noticed that introducing a pole into your living space can be an interesting experience, especially if you’re sharing with other people. From the things we love about our pole room to the things that drive us nuts, we cover the top 10 things home polers can relate to, and some handy tips and renovations that will totally inspire you to look at your pole room in a whole new way!

10. We go bananas over a good renovation story

If you have the means, there’s nothing more satisfying than starting from scratch and turning the pole room into a complete work of art. Julie Moran from Perth, Western Australia, shared her story of how she created her own dream home pole studio:

The renovation begins….

After – truly a work of art!

“We added the pole room as part of an extension to our existing house which took a year to plan and 18 months to build,” says Julie. “After having a small home pole space (in our shed), we decided that our vision for creating the perfect home pole room was ‘space and light’. We have 150sqm, with downlights, blacklights and natural light coming in on three sides…and, of course, three fantastic poles (we chose 38mm Pussycat Poles) and room to set- up six more if needed. Add in mirrors, high ceilings, music system, reverse cycle air-conditioning and a garden view, and all our boxes were ticked.”

“The main considerations were the West Australian heat and finding the right flooring. We were also looking for good height above the poles (which are 3.5m) as kicking the roof from past experience was something we needed to resolve. We had purpose built steel trusses made and as we were owner/builders we worked closely with all the suppliers. We had a fantastic, technically focused Project Manager to deliver the specialised requirements.”

“The advice I would share with home polers is to research and plan as much as possible. There are a number of innovative solutions that will save money in the long run. For example, we ended up using Perspex mirrors for the areas where there was no natural support available as they are lighter (and cheaper than glass mirrors). Also, buy your poles last as you will need the exact floor to ceiling height if you are getting ‘solid core’ poles.”

9. The pole takes over our living space

Whether your pole has its own devoted room or is nestled in a tight spot, the reality is a home pole tends to take up more room than we might first realise. Home polers have found weird and wonderful places to squeeze in a pole, such as the lounge room, bedroom, study area, kitchen, attic, basement and so on. It’s awesome having a pole right there to play on, but it also means people (and furniture) might be competing for your pole space, which brings us to…

8. We’ve kicked the furniture more times than we care to admit

Despite our best intentions of finding enough room for the pole, something in our space always seems to bear the brunt of a high kick or flying stiletto! Ceiling fans, lights and anything with sharp edges are particularly dangerous to collide with, so take them out first before you set up your pole! If you have limited space where stuff can’t easily be moved, Mel Nutter suggests this tip: “Use furniture to your advantage! Handstands in the hallway, large cabinet for barre work etc. If your pole area is small, use it to help you keep your transitions tight!”

7. The ceiling height might not be ideal, but we make the most of it

Even if you’re short in stature (like me), inverting on a pole can be a bit of an Alice-in-Wonderland experience. No sooner have you gone upside down than oops – there’s the roof! If you can easily plant your feet on the ceiling, try a few inverted body rolls for a bonus workout! And if you’re worried about ceiling damage, Amy Kennerly suggests adding some carpet as a buffer. A good, sturdy ceiling is essential to your safety, so always do your research before installing a pole! (Our readers recommend looking into permanent ceiling mounts if you have a tall ceiling!)

Angie Bee’s custom-made neon melting heart!

6. We love ambient lighting

Ambient lighting can really make our pole room feel special. It creates intimacy where the pole room becomes our ‘stage’ as we dance to our favourite music. We absolutely adore Angie Bee’s melting-heart neon light which she had custom-made at her local neon shop!

5. We hate nosey neighbours

Whenever a pole dancer is on full view for all the world to see, people can’t help but stop and stare. Sometimes we don’t even think about it, but other times it can be a nuisance to always have to close the blinds or curtains for a bit of privacy….Peeping Toms and potential stalkers are definitely not welcome! It’s also annoying if our neighbours complain about the noise coming from our pole room, usually from the sound of our heels banging against the floor!

4. We might be lured into skipping our pole training

Ironically, having our own pole with the intention to train regularly might lead us to train less, because of the distractions that get in the way when we pole at home! And boy, talk about distractions! If you’re nodding along to this point, check our Kei’s motivational blog post on 5 tips to get out of a pole depression, as well as our previous post on Help! I’m a lonely home poler. Another tip is to plug your TV / computer in your pole area, so you can work out along with your favourite DVDs (or arrange Skype dates with your pole buddies!)

3. We enjoy rolling around on the floor

The base of the pole is such a nice place to be; it’s where we like to stretch, snooze, slide around or just lie there staring up at the ceiling after a good pole rapture! If you prefer the smooth floorboard effect but don’t want the pain of tearing up the carpet, Jessica Rivers has this tip: “I got removable laminate flooring for $60 and put it myself over my blue carpet. I also needed plywood to create a more flat, stable surface before adding the laminate on top (it won’t work directly on the rug), which cost around $30. So for under $100, I got a floor I could use heels on!”

2. Everything looks better in pink (or metal, silver, purple or neon green…)

As home polers, we take great pride in giving our pole room our own bit of signature flourish, whether it’s a brightly painted wall or a unique bit of pole art that we’ve created. An inspirational quote or images from our favourite photoshoot can look gorgeous too. For a functional-yet-decorative effect, deck the ceiling edges with delicate light trimmings!

Nusaiba Al Muskari complements her growing aerial collection with a quality crash mat

1. We have an impressive collection of flex toys (and other accessories)

The options are endless with how many flex toys we’ll introduce into our pole space: yoga balls, mats, foam rollers, blocks…not to mention the possibilities of adding in an extra aerial or two such as lyra, silks, or a swinging pole! A must-have accessory recommended by Nusaiba Al Muskari is a good quality crash mat (not ordinary pillows). “It’s based on my experience!” says Nusaiba. “I had a bad fall. If I didn’t have the crash mat, I think it would have been a different scenario!”

Thank you to all the readers who shared their favourite home poling pics and tips including S.T Shimi, Mel Nutter, Fayne Winter, Amy Kennerly, Katie King, Julie Moran, Angie Bee, Angela Hayes-Johnson and Nusaiba Al Maskari!
