Pole gets more and more attention everyday, bringing plenty of new people into our little growing world of dance and fitness. Along with that growth comes a plethora of personalities, all different but all imperative on what makes pole so different from the rest of the sports out there. We created a list of some of the top personalities we’ve encountered and they all add so much to pole that it’s no wonder we’ve become such a tight-knit community!
1. The Gadget Geek
An avid poler, but an even more avid learner. She’s always working to improve her game and has all the gear to boot. Whether it’s the newest fitness tracking app, special straps to get her deadlift, or an at-home remedy to remove scuffs from her heels, she knows everything about everything and has the tools and tips for advancement. There’s also a 25% chance her college dissertation was related to pole. What makes her awesome: The best gift she gives is the one of knowledge. Ask her for some advice and she will go out of her way to find the correct information if she doesn’t already know about it. Her passion for pole is obvious in the way that she shares the newest innovation with everyone.
2. The Hot Mom
She’s her own type of superhero. Between getting the kids fed and off to school, laundry, cooking, it’s a wonder how she finds time to pole, but she does – and she is amazing at it. Her home pole sits in the middle of a slew of toys and her videos usually have children’s music as their backing track. Sometimes, she’s a mess but damn, she looks so good doing it! What makes her awesome: Pole is a hard enough sport, and to juggle it with the crazy schedule of motherhood is almost miraculous. She’s an inspiration to those who can’t find the time or the motivation to just do it and a reminder that there is always still time for ourselves despite any circumstance. Stretch marks or not, she’s beautiful and probably the coolest mom ever for letting her kids pole, too!
3. The Pole Wives
They have matching outfits, work on their doubles, and finish each other sentences. Rarely do you see these two apart both on and off the pole but quite often you can hear them screaming for each other as they nail their nemesis moves. They really do have no boundaries with each other which is solidified by their endless ass slaps and occasional grinding. The most annoying thing about them is wishing you had a pole wife like that. What makes them awesome: Having a best friend makes the sport that much more enjoyable and being able to trust someone with your life (literally) is a bond that is very hard to break. They are the epitome of what every person should be to another and in conclusion, they are #relationshipgoals for a lot of people. Nothing is more important than looking out for each other and these two get that more than anything.
4. The Athlete
She’s kind of a natural at picking up any sport, however, her knack for pole throws her lightyears ahead of the game in some aspects as she can pick up moves fairly quickly and she trains hard enough to get the moves she doesn’t. Specializing in “power moves” like the Fonji, the Iron X, and other crazy shit, she likes to cross train in sports like weights or other aerial arts. What could take some girls months or years can takes her a few days training but she pays for it by being perpetually sore, smelling like Icy Hot, and living in her Epsom Salt-filled bathtub. What makes her awesome: “Can’t” is not in her vocabulary but neither is “perfection.” She puts 100% of her effort into making things look easy and she dedicates her whole lifestyle to nailing that next move. Even at her peak, she’s striving to get better and better every day. She makes for a great coach in helping you get some rather difficult moves and she will always have some great tips on fitness and self-care. Her strength is both inside and out and it shows.
5. The Professional
Labeled in the real world by her career or profession, she keeps her pole life on the down-low, kind of like an alter-ego. Successful lawyer or nurse by day, she spends countless hours working and helping people as she climbs the corporate ladder in her pantsuit and ballet bun. By night, she’s a sexy, sexy sex symbol, frolicking around in nothing but skimpy hot pants, whipping her hair, and showing off her spreadies. What maker her awesome: She is empowered 24/7 and is very self-assured. With pole being her release from everyday work stress, she makes the most of her workout both in the studio and at home. Look to her for an extra push during class and she will also be great at helping you sort out your pole/life/work balance with ways to train and condition while you’re on-the-go. She also knows how to make Pleasers work with an everyday ensemble, because obviously.
6. The Dude
Seldom included in many pole lists but just as important as any female, the dude probably faces as many if not more struggles in the pole world as most girls. He’s out there trying to find pole shorts that let him grip the pole but without the implications of having his junk hang out and there are next to none male-centered pole brands. He’s listening to girls bitch about objectification but kindly accepts all of the creepy sexual comments he receives on ALL of his pole videos (please never stop posting them). His moves are intense yet full of grace and he’s confident enough to rock a pair of heels AND own them if he wants to. What makes him awesome: He is probably one of the few guys that truly understands the difficulty of pole and graciously doesn’t correct us when we forgetfully say it’s a female sport. Sexy yet strong, he showcases a perfect balance between masculinity and femininity without a second thought to others’ opinions. He can objectively help you clean up that routine or be an awesome partner in doubles but one thing is for sure: we’d be nothing without him.
7. The Entrepoleneur
She loves pole so much, she turned it into her career. Whether that’s making awesome outfits, posting tutorials, or touring the world as an instructor, she sometimes sacrifices her own pole or life goals but continues to do so knowing that she’s helping others achieve theirs. There are days where it doesn’t even feel like work and some days where she can’t keep it together but she perseveres and is genuinely proud of what she has to offer. What makes her awesome: She’s the ultimate display that anything is possible. Being a business owner doesn’t have to be number-crunching or constant poker face. It can be fun and you’re allowed to love it as much as you love the sport itself. She’ll be an encouraging figure for you both in pole and in life and is just as excited to help you figure out your dreams as if they were hers.
8. The Online Bestie(s)
You only see or talk to her online and you only know her instagram handle, but she is just as important to you as your real-life best friend. She’s posting her videos daily including her fails and shortcomings and commenting on your videos to encourage you and your pole journey. She’s constantly at the forefront of your newsfeed, putting herself out there and inspiring you to do so, too. Plus, those pole memes. All those pole memes. What makes her awesome: She can be a world away but give you that confidence boost with a few keystrokes and celebrate with you when you finally get the move you’ve been working on. Especially when you pole at home, she helps you feel a little less alone. Not exclusive to any particular person, she is always letting other polers know how great they are doing and in turn creates a cyber community where we can all talk and share together without judgement.
9. The Swan
Naturally graceful and super sexy, she can literally do anything and make it look awesome. One time she fell and turned it into a new pole trick. Her body awareness is on-point and no one is sure if she has even made the dreaded “ouch face” once in her life. Her floorwork is tantalizing and even the way she puts Dry Hands on is somehow sensual. Her posture is killer and she looks like a ballerina 24/7. Why she’s awesome: Rather than hate her, you’ll girl-crush hard on how pretty she can make everything look. She is a great example of how the simplest of moves can have a huge wow-factor if done with proper form and grace and that it’s not always about doing the most difficult trick. Ask her for some lessons on flow and lines and she will help you transform your most awkward moves into a clip from Black Swan.
10. The Stripper
Yes, she’s made this her job. No, that doesn’t separate her from everyone else. She trains day in and day out, rocks the Pleasers, and sometimes poles naked. The key difference here is that a lot of polers are paying hundreds and thousands of dollars for their hobby while she actually makes money from it. Rather than playing the game of who came first, the Poler or the Stripper, she’s out there just making the money she needs to live her life regardless of whatever stigma it carries. Why she’s awesome: Because she knows better than anyone how annoying it is to get mislabeled as something she is not and she’s also a pro at letting it slide off her back. There’s too many reasons to respect her: her work ethic, her hustle, her self-assuredness, and her pole game in general. She’s a prime example of how to make your hobby pay you back and if she does get bothered a bit by the haters, you can find her crying into piles of money.
